Five things we’re looking forward to in 2019

It’s been a wonderful year at Essex with many successes and memories made. It’s been fantastic to have support from our alumni in a variety of ways and we hope everyone has enjoyed starting or continuing their lifelong membership of Essex.

Here’s to another year together, these are a few things we’re looking forward to in 2019!

Asia Graduation

We are honoured to be holding our very first graduation ceremony outside of the UK, and all University of Essex graduates are invited to join the Vice Chancellor, the Registrar and Secretary, and the Dean of Partnerships at this prestigious event. Not only will this be a great occasion to celebrate your Essex degree, but it will be a fantastic networking opportunity with a reception following the ceremony.

Date: Saturday 23rd February 2019
Location: Beijing, China
Price £40 per graduate/£30 per guest

Essex in London series

After the huge success of our first event we’re excited to welcome you all in March to the second in our Essex in London series at the Institute of Physics.

This series of events showcase Essex research and our most inspiring speakers through ‘TED style’ presentations followed by a short Q&A. The next topic we will be uncovering is ‘Interactions between people and the planet – current challenges’. Hear Professor Christine Raines and Dr Michelle Taylor explore the challenges our world is currently facing.

Could you offer a venue for our final May event, or would you be interested in a role in one of these events? Please get in touch. Our alumni help to make our events a success for everyone, and we’d love to hear from you.

The opening of our hi-tech hothouse

We are looking forward to our Innovation Centre opening its doors for the first time in the new year.

The centre will further enrich the established business community on the Knowledge Gateway, joining more than 20 small businesses at Parkside Office Village. The development will provide space and hands-on start-up support for 50 businesses and organisations alongside supporting our commitment to boosting the economic impact of the University in the eastern region.

More alumni events and volunteering opportunities

Our events are a great opportunity to strengthen our alumni networks across the globe and, with the help of alumni, support current students in preparation for life after graduation.

Our 2018 Career Conversations event was a booming success with a huge turnout of students and a diverse range of alumni willing to share tips and tricks for life after graduation. The Vice-Chancellor has also met alumni around the world at events in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Delhi. We can’t wait to meet more of you next year!

We have plenty of volunteer opportunities coming up for 2019 and are always keen to hear from alumni who might be interested! Your stories and career insights are invaluable for students (and fellow alumni!) planning their next steps. If you would like to share your experiences by being a guest speaker at one of our events, or you would like to find out more about volunteering opportunities such as blogging or representing Essex at a recruitment fair near you, please contact

We must admit the highlight of nearly every year at Essex is graduation and we’re already excited for the 2019 ceremonies. It’s the busiest week of the year but also the most rewarding, seeing students and alumni who may have missed their graduation first time round graduate and celebrate their hard work fills us with pride; we’re sure this year will be no different!
